U.S. Elsewhere: 11/11/12 Soccer Match Day – Kljestan Scores, Gatt & Molde Clinch

Josh Gatt and Molde secured their second straight Tippeligaen title in Norway today with a 1-0 victory over Hønefoss.  The victory coupled with a Strømsgodset IF’s loss at Sandnes Ulf sealed the Eliteserien title for the Mark Dempsey led squad.  The title was clinched with a match to spare.  Gatt came on at halftime with the match level.  Steve Clark  from Mason, Michigan started in goal for Hønefoss.  After the match Gatt tweeted a hint at a call up for the USMNT.

In the Belgian First Division Royal Sporting Club Anderlecht beat up on Club Bruges 6-1.  Sacha Kljestan tallied one of the goals and heard chants of USA as the fans reacted.  The win put Anderlecht two points clear of ZulteWaregem atop the Jupiler League.  Kljestan went the full match as his 54th minute goal made it 4-0.  Enjoy the video of the goal and how Kljestan’s last name is pronounced.

In England, Clint Dempsey, Brad Friedel, and Tottenham fell to Manchester City 2-1.  The clinching goal came in the 88th minute despite Friedel’s best efforts.  He denied David Silva with his feet and followed promptly with a save on Sergio Aguero.  Still he had little chance to stop the second City goal by super-sub Edin Dzeko.  It was a forgettable match for Dempsey who was not a threat at all.  Today’s performance has lead Dan Fitch of ESPN to question if Dempsey is good enough for Spurs.

In Italy, Michael Bradley and AS Roma fell to Lazio 3-2.  Bradley went the full match and was given a yellow card in the 25th minute.  In all nine cards were awarded leading to a man being sent off for both squads.  Lazio had the man advantage for almost 40 minutes when Daniele de Rossi struck Stefano Mauri in the face in first half stoppage time.  The ‘Derby della Capitale’ went to Lazio for the third straight time as the match was played on a soaked pitch and delayed when a floodlight had failed.   In the waning moments Bradley found Pablo Daniel Osvaldo with a searching through ball but the finish was not there.  Roma is now five points behind Lazio for a Europa League spot in Serie A.
