U.S. Elsewhere: Dempsey Nets 2 in FA Cup, Packwood Breaks Leg

Third Round action of the FA Cup dominated the soccer landscape today and it was a very successful day for Clint Dempsey.  His Tottenham Hotspur cruised to a 3-0 win over Coventry City behind two goals from Deuce.  He now has three in the new calendar year and is hopefully heating up for the upcoming World Cup qualifying matches.  Dempsey also assisted on the third goal for Spurs as his connection with Gareth Bale continues to blossom.  He opened the scoring in the 14th minute by tapping in a neat pass from Bale.  Brad Friedel recorded the clean sheet for Tottenham making four saves.  The day was not so good for Will Packwood as the 19-year old Birmingham City defender had to be stretchered off.  He came off in the 66th minute in pain and the trainers even gave him an oxygen mask after a collision with Luciano Becchio.  The game would end in a 1-1 draw between Birmingham and Leeds.  Manager Lee Clark describes the play.

We should be celebrating a fantastic performance by my young players, but this is a real downer. I heard the snap and was hoping it was a shin pad. It was an innocuous one with two players going for the ball.

Another young player, Conor Doyle provided an assist after coming on as a substitute in Derby County’s 5-1 win over Tranmere.

Geoff Cameron went the full match in a scoreless draw between Stoke City and Crystal Palace.

Brad Guzan was given a much-needed day off in a 2-1 victory for Aston Villa over Ipswich Town.  Eric Lichaj started but was credited with an own goal early in the match.
