As expected Andrew Farrell was the top pick in the Major League Soccer SuperDraft on Thursday afternoon. After the New England Revolution traded up to obtain the number one pick from Toronto, the Louisville defender was the target. Farrell was named the Big East Defender of the Year and is expected to contribute right away to the Revs. Trades were the order of the day as Kevin Payne and Toronto FC were very active. The picks were not necessarily surprises as most of the top ranked players went in the top 20. However, the organizations were willing to move around to grab the right player.
Chivas USA stuck to their word by selecting Carlos Alvarez of Connecticut. Canadian Kyle Bekker went third to Toronto who then traded the newly acquired fourth pick to Vancouver. The Whitecaps had back to back picks from trades selecting Kekuta Manneh and Erik Hurtado fourth and fifth, respectively. The selection of Manneh puts Kenny Miller’s future in jeopardy despite signing only last year.
Deshorn Brown went number six to Colorado. Philadelphia was looking to trade up for Brown but the Rapids snagged up the Generation Adidas forward. Dallas had to be pleased when defenseman Walker Zimmerman fell to them at number seven. With Eriq Zavaleta still on the board at 10, the Seattle Sounders traded with Toronto to grab the versatile player from Indiana University. Check out the tracker to see all the picks.Aside from the wheeling and dealing, Toronto also picked up Ontario-born Emery Welshmen and plenty of allocation money today. Payne had a plan and executed it to perfection. Welshman, a speedy striker, is also a big fan of Toronto FC. The staff at MLSsoccer.com caught up with Welshmen.
Many felt that Mikey Lopez fell in the draft but may have slid into a perfect spot with Sporting KC. Kansas City needed a central midfielder after they lost Roger Espinoza and Julio Cesar this offseason. Lopez may have found a great place to be on a successful team. Generation Adidas forward Jason Johnson may have suffered from a sluggish combine, but landed with Houston at number 13.
What did you think of the draft? Can anyone compete with TFC as the winners?
