Timmy Chandler had a rough start to his week as he was taken out of a 1-1 tie with Hamburg with concern of a concussion. He got good news a couple days later that he escaped the concussion, but the joy had to quickly dissipate when he realized that his Nürnberg team takes on Borussia Dortmund on Friday night. Chandler has played every match for Der Club this year and now will be tested at Westphalia where they have not won since November 1990. It will also be Schal-la-la day for Dortmund where all fans are asked to wear a black and yellow scarf for the first home game of the calendar year. Dortmund is currently three points out of second place on the scoring of Robert Lewandowski, Marco Reus, and Mario Götze.
After failing to capitalize on an opportunity last week, Shawn Parker and Mainz will look to run away from 18th place Greuther Fürth. Of course, Parker picked up two yellows in the previous match. FC Augsburg and Michael Parkhurst takes on Schalke. Jermaine Jones is still suspended for Schalke and Parkhurst has yet to make his debut. Steve Cherundolo is still dealing with an injury as Hannover takes on Wolfsburg.
In England, fourth round play in the FA Cup takes the spotlight. It will start on Friday when Aston Villa plays Millwall. Brad Guzan could be in net with Eric Lichaj dependent on injuries for his starting case. Saturday is the showcase game as Geoff Cameron and Stoke City take on Manchester City. A match featuring a few players from the U.S. pits Bolton against Everton. Could Tim Howard, the Everton keeper, have to stop Stuart Holden and Tim Ream? On Sunday, Brad Friedel and Clint Dempsey take on Leeds as Tottenham goes on the road.
In The Turkish League Bursaspor, Maurice Edu’s new club, takes on Istanbul Buy. The teams are only separated by three points.
Other U.S. players in action include Jozy Altidore and AZ Alkmaar against VVV Venlo on Friday. Santos Laguna and Herculez Gomez take on Leon on Friday as well. Club Tijuana with Joe Corona and Edgar Castillo play Pachuca on Saturday. Corona was nursing an injury last weekend. DaMarcus Beasley and Michael Orozco Fiscal of Peubla take on Cruz Azul.
Finally, AS Roma and Michael Bradley battle Bologna on Sunday.
