Clint Dempsey and Jozy Altidore are almost scoring when they want this month. Dempsey found the net in a 2-1 loss to Leeds United in the FA Cup. Dempsey had plenty of opportunities and was set up by a searching cross from Gareth Bale. Deuce got his head to it and looped it far corner to beat the keeper. He now has five goals in the last five matches. Dempsey is getting consistent playing time now due to injuries and players in the African Cup of Nations. He has worked well with Bale. Still Tottenham were knocked out of the FA Cup on a weekend that upsets reigned. Unfortunately, Brad Friedel was in net for the Spurs.
Altidore now has 15 goals this year which matches his total from last year. He is one goal behind Wilfried Bony in the race for most goals in the Eredivisie this year. AZ are in ninth place, but 12 points back of sixth place Utrecht. This goal was a delicate finish.
Fabian Johnson joined Steve Cherundolo as injured U.S. players in the Bundesliga this weekend. Cherundolo has had a nagging injury during the winter break, but now Johnson was a late scratch for Hoffenheim with a knee injury. This is a concern with the hexagonal just a few days away. Both players seemed like locks for the roster, but this will open up big spots for Timmy Chandler and Michael Parkhurst if the injury concerns mount. Parkhurst has yet to be used in a match since his transfer to Augsburg.
Elsewhere around the world Michael Bradley played the full match for AS Roma in a 3-3 draw against Bologna. It was not the best day for Bradley or Roma in a game that feature poor marking. The equalizer for Roma came in the 74th minute to get the point. Still Bradley’s team sits outside the top six.

Xolos are still perfect in the Clausura championship after four match days beating Pachuca 2-0. Edgar Castillo got a yellow in the 17th minute and went the full match while Joe Corona played only the first half. Tijuana and Tigres, Jonathan Bornstein’s club, have secured all 12 points so far this season.
