Sporting Kansas City’s preseason victory over the Portland Timbers was tempered by the loss of striker Soony Saad, who was stretchered off the field following what appeared an innocuous challenge by Mamadou Danso in the 60th minute. Saad, 20 years old and in his third MLS season, went down at the edge of the Portland box after Danso made contact from behind, unable to return to his feet after the official waived play on. He is being treated in Tucson, site of the friendly, for what his team has revealed is a bruised tailbone.
The loss of Saad deals another blow to a corps of KC forwards already thinned by the loan of Kei Kamara to Norwich City in the English Premier League. But despite the loss of Saad, Kansas City would score the only goal of the contest in the 82nd minute. Right back Meshack Jerome, a Haitian international on trial with the club, blasted a hard, low free kick from just outside the right corner of the Timbers penalty area for the winning strike.
Sporting, who drew earlier this week to 4th-division FC Tucson, showed resolve in rebounding against the Timbers. Kansas City returns to the pitch on Feb. 9 when they face the Montreal Impact in Orlando at the Disney Soccer Classic. Portland remains in Arizona for their match against the rival Seattle Sounders on the 5th.
