After consecutive losses to the Portland Timbers and the Houston Dynamo at the Desert Friendlies in Tucson, the Colorado Rapids finally pieced together a winning side against a San Jose Earthquakes squad loaded with trialists. The missing ingredient proved to be Scottish international Jamie Smith, who scored the only goal of the match in the 65th minute in his first game back with Colorado.
Dominating the run of play throughout the first 45 minutes, Colorado was unable to crack the Quakes defense. San Jose actually had the two best chances of the first half, 2013 SuperDraft selection Deshorn Brown missing wide with a header in the 17th minute and 2012 SuperDraft pick Tony Cascio missing on a left-footed strike in the 27th minute. Neither team, though, would manage to find the back of the net.
The decisive developments that led to Smith’s goal twenty minutes after halftime began when Colorado’s own SuperDraft pick, defender Chris Klute, moved the ball up the left flank to find Andre Akpan. Bearing down toward the box, Akpan whipped in a low cross that Smith expertly one-timed past goalkeeper Evan Newton for the winner.
Both teams head home from Tucson before heading to their next preseason tournaments. Houston will next play Feb. 16-23 in the Carolina Challenge Cup in Charleston, SC. San Jose will play in the Portland Preseason Tournament Feb. 17-23.
