In front of the largest home crowd of Opening Day for the 2013 MLS season, the Seattle Sounders dropped a 1-0 decision to the Eastern Conference dark-horse Montreal Impact. The Canadian club, which had won just twice on the road in 2012, played sound defensively as they stifled Seattle’s attack and made a first-half goal from Davy Arnaud stand up for the upset.

Arnaud’s goal, coming in the 35th minute, showed a deft touch around the goal. Felipe Martins chipped the ball over the defense from 40 yards out, finding the Montreal captain onside thanks to the positioning of Leonardo Gonzalez. Arnaud tapped down the pass, catching Sounders goalkeeper Michael Gspurning off his line with a right-footed half-volley over the Austrian to give the visitors the lead.

Seattle would continue to press forward, controlling possession much as they had before Arnaud’s strike, but the Sounders would remain down 1-0 at halftime. The script played out much the same way in the second half, Seattle’s attack surging forward, putting together pass after accurate pass and peppering Impact keeper Troy Perkins with shot after wicked shot. But Perkins was tall to the task of protecting the lead, and the revamped back line held firm for Montreal to preserve the clean sheet and the one-goal victory.
