DC United goalkeeper Bill Hamid was bombarded early and often by a feisty New York Red Bulls offense as they sought their first win of the season in the home opener at Red Bull Arena. New York would create two dozen scoring chances for itself, getting seven of their shots on goal. Hamid stonewalled the Red Bulls repeatedly and completely, keeping his clean sheet and forcing the home side to settle for a scoreless draw — the first 0-0 match of the 2013 MLS regular season finally coming on the third weekend.
There was plenty of excitement for the 22,000 fans in attendance. The Red Bulls had their first good chance of the afternoon in the 8th minute, when Thierry Henry’s blast was tipped out by Hamid for a corner and then Jonathan Steele narrowly pushed his attempt wide on the ensuing cross. Fabian Espindola came close in the 24th minute, his header of Henry’s cross ringing off the post. Despite at least a half-dozen golden opportunities to go ahead, New York was kept scoreless by Hamid and his defense through the intermission.
The Red Bulls continued their offensive onslaught in the second half, but once again Hamid was more than a match for every chance booted his direction. United would ramp up their own attack, putting marginal pressure on New York goalkeeper Luis Robles, but ultimately it was up to Hamid to preserve the draw for his club. By tossing aside seven shots that were destined for the back of his net, the keeper ensured that DC would head back south from their road match with a crucial point.
For the Red Bulls, who have now claimed just two of a possible nine points in their first three matches, this was hardly the expected start to the MLS season. The offensive opportunities are coming in droves, yet the goals have been lacking.DC UNITED @ NEW YORK RED BULLS
