Drew Moor Red Card Adds Insult to Injuries in Colorado Rapids Defeat

The Colorado Rapids literally know what it feels like to have insult added onto injury after Saturday’s match the Los Angeles Galaxy at the Home Depot Center. Clint Irwin was already starting in goal in place of injured number-one Matt Pickens. Captain Pablo Mastroeni and center back Diego Calderon were forced to leave the game in the first half, each suffering quadriceps injuries in the run of play, and the spine of the Rapids defense further suffered as a result. Then the other center back, Drew Moor, earned himself an ejection just as the second half commenced.

Mastroeni had just come back from a hamstring injury suffered a fortnight ago and lasted just 23 minutes, promptly straining the other muscle in his thigh as he ran down Colin Clark. Calderon went down after crashing into the goalpost less than ten minutes later, suffering a deep bruise on his right quad after clearing a shot from the line. But things remained level at the intermission, as the Rapids had weathered the young attacking partnership of Jack McBean and Jose Villareal for 45 minutes.

Drew Moor’s elbow of Marcelo Sarvas in the penalty area ensured that there would be no joy on the return back to Colorado. With Chris Klute already struggling in Calderon’s place, Moor tried to fend off Marcelo. As he sacrificed position, he flailed his left arm deliberately backward; there was nothing theatrical about the reaction as Sarvas crumpled to the turf holding his face. Moor, knowing he was in the wrong, was already leaving the pitch as referee Armando Villarreal approached to present the red card.

Mike Magee stepped up and converted the ensuing penalty kick, and with the Rapids depleted and dejected the solitary goal was enough to earn the victory for Los Angeles. Galaxy goalkeeper Carlo Cudicini, tested just thrice throughout the 90 minutes, would earn his second clean sheet of the young season in the shutout.
