Obafemi Martins Leads Seattle Sounders to First MLS Win in 2013

Apr 20, 2013; Commerce City, CO, USA; Seattle Sounders forward Obafemi Martins (9) is surrounded by his teammates and congratulated by midfielder Osvaldo Alonso (6) after scoring a goal in the first half against the Colorado Rapids at Dick

They needed six matches, and they still sit at the bottom of the Western Conference standings, but the Seattle Sounders finally notched a win on Saturday afternoon. Thanks to Obafemi Martins’ first MLS goal, the Sounders knocked off the Colorado Rapids on the road to nab their first victory of 2013 as they try to right the ship from an uncharacteristic March.

Martins got his goal in the 27th minute, finishing off a rebound opportunity to beat Rapids goalkeeper Clint Irwin. The play started with Shalrie Joseph’s rocket blast, which Irwin tipped away but could not hold. The ball fell right to Martins, who easily finished off the play from short range and raced to do a backflip in celebration. Amazingly, the goal gave the Sounders a lead in an MLS match for the first time since March 16.

Colorado’s best chance for an equalizer came in the 60th minute, but Sounders keeper Michael Gspurning survived the onslaught to keep his clean sheet. It all started when Brian Mullan whipped in a cross from the right flank. Atiba Harris drove a shot that Gspurning parried away; waiting for the carom was Danny Mwanga, the former first overall pick in the SuperDraft, who hurried his shot and drove it directly back to the keeper.

The Austrian in goal would be forced to make several more saves as Colorado fought with increasing desperation for a point. The Rapids would enjoy a wide majority in possession and passing accuracy, generating a half-dozen more chances than the Sounders. But the lack of finishing by Colorado prevented them from taking a point, and thanks to Seattle’s new Nigerian striker every team in the league now has at least one victory on their record.
