While the Atlantic crossing has long been a bridge for American talent, the nature of the "business trip" has fundamentally changed. USMNT players are no longer merely happy to secure a roster spot at a European club, we are witnessing a takeover as American stars climb the highest steps of the European club ladder and competitions.

The blueprint was drafted by icons like Tim Howard, Clint Dempsey, and John Harkes, pioneers who made Europe their home and established a gritty, reliable reputation for the American professional. But today’s generation has moved beyond mere survival.

The depth of this shift is reflected in Mauricio Pochettino’s latest selections: in his most recent 27-man squad, 18 players were from European clubs. Perhaps most telling of the domestic landscape is that the only area still dominated by MLS is the goalkeeper union, with four domestic keepers rounding out the roster. For the outfielders, however, the message is clear: to play for the Red, White, and Blue, many are proving their talent on the continent's most demanding stages.

We look at the three USMNT players getting attention from European leagues this season.

Ricardo Pepi

Ricardo Pepi has lifted the Eredivisie title, and despite missing a significant portion of the season through injury, he has still managed to average a goal every other game. The El Paso–born forward has scored 11 goals in 22 appearances, while his return of three goals in five UEFA Champions League outings further underlines his quality.

The striker was heavily linked with a move to the Premier League in both the summer and January windows. However, a proposed switch to Fulham ultimately collapsed, as PSV Eindhoven were unable to secure a replacement at short notice and therefore priced the deal out of reach.

Pepi will want to be prolific at the World Cup to show potential suitors he is ready for the next level up.

Aidan Morris

Defensive midfielders are often overlooked in Player of the Season debates, but at Middlesbrough there are two strong contenders for that honour. Aidan Morris has been outstanding, alongside Hayden Hackney, throughout the campaign.

There is a compelling case that Morris has been the best in the league in his position, a claim that is unlikely to go unnoticed by top clubs, particularly if Middlesbrough fall short of promotion to the Premier League. With results dipping in recent weeks, that scenario is becoming increasingly possible. Still, the former Columbus Crew midfielder will be focused on a strong finish to the season, both to boost his club’s chances and to cement his place in an increasingly competitive national team midfield roster.

His game is built on intelligent use of possession, sharp distribution, and an ability to break up play, qualities that make him such a consistent and influential presence at the base of midfield.

Chris Richards

Chris Richards has grown into the role of a Premier League defender after a shaky start following his arrival in South London in 2022. He is now beginning to show the pedigree associated with his time at Bayern Munich, where he developed during his youth career.

Thriving in a back-three system in the post–Marc Guéhi era, Richards is emerging as a commanding presence and leader at the heart of the defence. His recent form has not gone unnoticed, with several clubs reportedly monitoring the 26-year-old. Crystal Palace have lost just twice in the league since February with Richards playing a heavy part, while he has also maintained their push for a UEFA Europa Conference League trophy.

At international level, Pochettino looks to Richards as a defensive leader, someone who will be relied upon heavily and trusted to deliver when the World Cup arrives.

Reputable mentions should also go to Haji Wright, Folarin Balogun and Julian Hall, who could make Europe his home in the next year.
