Celtic F.C. is adding a third American to its defensive ranks, signing left-back Landon Emenalo to a season-long loan deal from Chelsea. The Arizona-born prospect will look for more playing time to launch his international career.
Emenalo joins USMNT veterans Auston Trusty and Cameron Carter-Vickers at Celtic. A move to the Scottish top flight could be just what Emenalo needs to be seriously considered for a senior national team. He is eligible to represent the United States, his birth country, England, the country where he grew up, and Nigeria, the birth nation of his father, Michael.
Emenalo's split international allegiance
He currently represents England at the youth level, playing 16 total games for England youth teams. But Emenalo has also played for the U.S. Youth National Team and could change allegiance back. His mother is also American, and Emenalo was seen wearing a USMNT shirt in a Chelsea preseason video this summer.

It's no secret that England presents the biggest challenge for Emenalo to break through the ranks, with young stars Nico O'Reilly, Myles Lewis-Skelly, and Lewis Hall as likely options for the next World Cup cycle. His choice would then be between the United States and Nigeria, a race that could heat up quickly.
The Nigerian connection
Recently, Ibrahim Gusau resigned from his position as president of the Nigeria Football Federation, leaving a vacancy in its highest-ranking position. Michael Emenalo, a decorated technical director from his time at Chelsea, has been suggested as the optimal candidate for the job.
Should his father take over the NFF, Landon Emenalo would have an extremely difficult decision to make about his eligibility. For that reason alone, the USMNT should consider making a move. There's no true second choice left back behind Antonee Robinson, so Emenalo could fill that hole.
It is unlikely that the decision will be made ahead of the upcoming camp later this month, considering Emenalo is nursing an injury that will keep him out for a couple more weeks. But at some point this season, Mauricio Pochettino needs to make sure he becomes a U.S. international.
