Alex Freeman is a great work in progress everywhere he's played. His next stop will be the U.S. Men’s National Team.

He worked his way onto the Orlando City SC pitch as a defender after signing a four-year homegrown contract in 2022. In his breakout year, he earned honors including 2025 Defender of the Year and 2025 MLS Best XI. He was the squad’s first member to be named MLS Young Player of the Year.

Also in 2025, Freeman got his first senior call-up to the USMNT. He became the youngest player to make six consecutive appearances for the national team in the Concacaf Gold Cup.

Little did anyone know, Freeman hasn’t peaked yet. He steadily reveals new skills he’s learned beyond his known strength as a right back.

You haven’t figured Alex Freeman out

But you can’t ever settle back and decide you’ve figured Freeman out.

In January of this year, La Liga side Villarreal CF made Orlando City a transfer proposal they had to answer. It drew a club-record fee for a homegrown player, with Orlando retaining a sell-on percentage in case of another move. But there won’t be any move, save for the international call-up.

He’s continued to surge at Villarreal. That includes developing his right-midfield position. The La Liga organization has been careful in budgeting Freeman’s time on the pitch. He only played his first full 90 minutes in April against Celta Vigo, a 2-1 win for Freeman’s team.

When he gets the USMNT call, he comes in with 15 appearances including the two goals he scored against Uruguay in  a 5-1 friendly win.

His style is thoroughly documented by scouts as consistently playing with power at a fast pace. While teams recognize that he is still developing, he always works on the right side, whether on defense or in the midfield. That versatility could win him a spot in this year's USMNT World Cup roster, set to be announced at the end of May.

Whether coming off the bench or staying on the pitch for 90 minutes, the only thing he can’t do is slow down and stop.
