Not exactly a matchup many people envisioned ahead of the 2026 MLS campaign, let alone one that could shape the Eastern Conference playoff picture. But when the two players took to the pitch in Toronto, the situation could not have been more critical.
A strong post-World Cup run of form, which has seen Toronto FC go 2-5-1 (wins - draws - losses) across eight MLS contests, has helped to push the Reds to the very edge of the playoff picture. That said, Sargent had only recorded a goal and an assist throughout those eight games.
Meanwhile, Lewandowski has enjoyed a solid start to life in MLS. While Lewandowski's Chicago Fire side has gone just 3-2-2 since his arrival - a run that has seen the club fail to gain any ground on Inter Miami, Nashville SC, or the New England Revolution - he has recorded five goals through his first seven appearances for the club.
Little did viewers know that the two would go punch-for-punch in one of the games of the season. Lewandowski ended up recording a goal and an assist, while Sargent scored a hat trick in what was a 4-4 decision.
Sargent's first goal came in the 27th minute off a pass into the box, which brought Toronto level after Maren Haile-Selassie gave the Fire an early 1-0 lead. The second came 11 minutes later, when a short-taken corner kick led to another shot from Sargent; the goal gave Toronto a 2-1 lead, which they would successfully carry into the halftime break.
Sargent completed the hat trick in the 54th minute, with a shot from outside the box beating fellow American goalkeeper Chris Brady. The goal re-established Toronto's lead at 3-2 after American defender Walker Zimmerman put a cross into his own net.
Is Sargent's performance a breakthrough ahead of international window?
After recording just four goals in the lead-up to the Chicago Fire match, Sargent's hat trick could easily be seen as the performance that Toronto FC was anticipating when they completed the transfer to bring him across the Atlantic Ocean.
But given that it had taken him this long to put together this kind of a performance, his hat trick against the Chicago Fire will, for now, remain a blip on the radar. It is worth noting that he has scored goals in two of the last three games, but if I were the USMNT, I would wait to see what happens on Wednesday against Nashville before putting him into the conversation for selection ahead of the upcoming international window.
Should his form continue, there might be an open spot or two in the forward group for Sargent to claim. Haji Wright has yet to make an appearance this season for Coventry City; he's sidelined with a quad injury. At the same time, the fallout from Everton's failed transfer for Folarin Balogun continues to have ramifications for all parties; Balogun was recently excluded from Monaco's European involvement, which could impact his international involvement amid the Ligue 1 side's unbeaten start to the campaign.
But he will have competition. And that is only going to further ramp the pressure up ahead of Toronto's massive contest against Nashville.
