Matt Freese is now the undisputed USMNT number one as Mauricio Pochettino has now discovered the answer to the question that has been troubling the soccer nation pre-tournament. The answer has all but been achieved despite the player in question not playing a single minute in the final match in Group D.
Despite Turkey not scoring with their 62 shots in the first two games, the European nation managed to score three goals, including a last-minute winner.
Pochettino handed Matt Turner a rare start against Turkey, offering the experienced goalkeeper a World Cup opportunity to stake his claim for the knockout rounds, and pose a question for the coaches. While Turner could hardly be blamed for any of Turkey's three goals, he also failed to produce the commanding display needed to give his manager cause for a selection dilemma.
To be fair to the ‘keeper, Turner was far from the only player to miss his chance. The defence was the let down for Turkey's three goals, while the wingers in Tim Weah and Brenden Aaronson failed to pose a threat. In fact, no members of the starting XI did enough to force their way into Pochettino's plans, leaving Freese's grip on the No. 1 jersey looking stronger and a starting XI comfortable more than ever heading into the knockout stage.
Matt Freese was a much better performer in the two games
As we previously reported, the No. 1 shirt now belongs to Freese. In truth, he has not had to produce a string of spectacular saves to earn it. The New York City FC goalkeeper was largely untested in the opening win over Paraguay, with little chance of preventing the visitors' lone goal. Against Australia, however, he delivered when called upon, making two crucial saves to preserve a clean sheet.
Just as importantly, Freese has brought composure and authority to the back line. His command of the penalty area and growing understanding with Tim Ream and Chris Richards have helped carry the hosts into the knockout stages. Now, the 27-year-old has the chance to etch his name into USMNT folklore if he can help guide the United States past Bosnia and Herzegovina and deep into the tournament.
The goalkeeping debate appears to have been settled, with Freese having taken his opportunity under Pochettino and firmly establishing himself as the leading option moving forward. If his form continues, he looks set to retain the role not only for the remainder of this tournament, but as the long-term No. 1 for World Cups too.
