The New England Revolution supporters raised a Matt Turner tifo, which read "POCH TAKE NOTE, THERE'S ONLY ONE MATT TURNER." This was at the MLS game between the Revs and Minnesota United last weekend, sending a clear message to the USMNT head coach, Mauricio Pochettino.
Revs fans no doubt value Turner as he is a club legend. They were his first MLS club, he won the Supporters Shield with them in 2021, and made over 100 appearances for the side before signing for Arsenal.
It did not work out for Turner at the Gunners as he made just seven appearances in total for them, all of which came in the Europa League and the FA Cup. In search of first-team soccer, Turner then joined Nottingham Forest, but lost his place to Matz Sels.
Turner then went on loan to Crystal Palace, where he was also a backup goalkeeper. He then went to Olympique Lyonnais and has been on loan at New England this season. The keeper has played 13 times in MLS this season, conceding 17 goals and keeping three clean sheets.
Matt Turner is no longer the number one keeper for the USMNT
The Revs have done well this season so far; they are currently third in the Eastern Conference. Only Nashville and Inter Miami are ahead of them. Despite Turner's form, he has not been able to earn his place back as the USMNT's first-choice keeper.
Turner is the most experienced option for Pochettino; he has 53 caps and was the starting keeper at the 2022 World Cup. However, Matt Freese is currently the number one for the Stars and Stripes. Freese of New York City FC has played in 14 of the last 16 USMNT matches. The NYCFC keeper has played 13 MLS games this season, conceding 19 goals and keeping three clean sheets.
The goalie position used to be a real strength for the USMNT. They had the likes of Tim Howard, Brad Friedel, and Kasey Keller in the past. However, the fact that the Stars and Stripes no longer have a keeper at a European side is a concern.
Other goalkeeping options, such as Chris Brady and Patrick Schulte, are with the Chicago Fire and the Columbus Crew, respectively. Turner has just one more MLS game to impress Pochettino as the Revs play Charlotte FC this Sunday. MLS then has a break, and New England does not have a game until July 23.
