Tyler Adams is officially Captain America again. Mauricio Pochettino announced Friday that the midfielder would become the new full-time captain of the United States Men's National Team.
The distinction is not foreign to Adams, who captained Gregg Berhalter's USMNT to the Round of 16 in the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. At that tournament, Adams was a 23-year-old still breaking into the Premier League ranks. Now, he's one of the veterans of the group and a staple of the midfield.

Adams was the only choice
There was some speculation as to who would become the next USMNT captain after Tim Ream wore the armband for Pochettino in the 2026 World Cup. However, Adams was always the perfect man for the job. He has experience in the leadership role and serves as the perfect bridge from the old guard to the next generation. Pochettino spoke highly of Adams when he announced the new captain to the rest of the squad.
"I think it's important to have a captain that cares about you. Challenging us, challenging me, challenging the coaching staff, the Federation, everyone. What I expect from him is to be natural and to fight for you."Mauricio Pochettino, via @USMNT on X
Adams is a natural fit to lead the U.S. Men's National Team into its next era, the 2030 World Cup cycle. With a load of new players entering the ranks, the captain will need to be someone who can keep the unit steady. That is where Tyler Adams shines.
The New York native has earned 60 USMNT caps since making his senior debut in 2017, scoring two goals. Adams, better known for his defensive acumen, is the engine in Pochettino's midfield.

This past World Cup, Adams played the full 90 minutes against Paraguay, Australia, and Bosnia and Herzegovina. He sat out the game against Turkey, like most starters, and played the first 72 minutes against Belgium before being subbed off for more attacking options.
Adams has shown himself to be an integral part of the USMNT's identity, playing the holding midfield role in a dynamic system that demands the most from each of its players. Now, he will be given the opportunity to lead the team off the pitch as well.
