USMNT Championship Recap (Matchday 8): Stoke City enters playoff picture and another thriller for Middlesbrough

Eight 2026-27 Championship matchdays are in the books. From that span of matches, it's safe to say that the USMNT has truly made an impact on the state of affairs in the Championship. Let's take a look at how USMNT players fared in Matchday 8.

Stoke City bests Sheffield United 2-1 behind goal from Jack McGlynn

Stoke City's impressive run of form continued Saturday morning as they rallied to earn a 2-1 victory over Sheffield United. Jack McGlynn played the full 90 minutes, while Luca Bombino came on as a substitute in the 79th minute.

Manchester City loanee Kalvin Phillips opened the scoring with his first goal of the campaign, giving the Blades a 1-0 lead early in the second half. 27 minutes later, McGlynn brought Stoke City level with his second goal of the season; he's now scored goals in two consecutive matches. Sam Gallagher completed Stoke City's comeback with an 86th-minute game-winner, which also served as his second goal of the campaign.

Define defense, anyone? Middlesbrough have now given up at least two goals in each of their last four contests, but their defensive blunders haven't cost them significant positioning just yet. That said, they certainly played a role in the outcome against Birmingham City, who were able to hold Middlesbrough to a 2-2 draw.

Max Arfsten scored his first goal for Middlesbrough late in the first half, giving the club a 1-0 advantage heading into the break. But his efforts were undone by ex-Hull City hero Liam Millar, who scored to level the game just 10 minutes after the break and then took the corner that ended up pinballing around the Middlesbrough penalty area and into the net off the left side of Riley McGree.

McGree came off shortly after for Sebastian Berhalter, who helped Middlesbrough push back and ultimately earn their own leveller. That second goal was scored by Adilson Malanda off what seemed like a foul on Birmingham keeper James Beadle, but it ended up being a botched save on his part.

Aidan Morris played another full 90 minutes; while he didn't get onto the scoresheet, he made some key passes that helped push Middlesbrough up the pitch and into position to create scoring opportunities. Rokas Pukstas remained on the bench for the duration of the match. Of the quartet of Americans on Middlesbrough, Berhalter is the only one on the USMNT roster for the upcoming international break.

West Brom's unbeaten run ends at the hands of Wolves

West Brom's four-match unbeaten run, which saw the club pick up two 1-0 wins and a pair of 1-1 draws, came to an end Sunday morning as Wolves defeated West Brom 1-0 behind a second-half goal from Fer López. George Campbell got the start for West Brom, playing the full 90 minutes while recording a foul.

What's next?

This weekend's action represented the last round of Championship action prior to the first international break of the season. Heading into the international window, three Championship sides with USMNT players currently sit inside the top eight of the table. Middlesbrough is the first team outside the automatic promotion places. When they return to action, Middlesbrough will face Wolverhampton in a clash of two early contenders.

Elsewhere, Kristoffer Lund and Birmingham currently hold 10th place in the table. They will visit Campbell and West Brom after the international break. Meanwhile, Caleb Wiley and Preston North End would be relegated in 23rd as things stand. They will look to escape the bottom three after the break when they host Millwall, who sit in 11th place in the Championship.

The October 10 fixtures will also feature McGlynn leading Stoke City against Bolton, who are starting to find some form again after snapping a four-game losing streak. If Stoke City secures a result in this fixture, they will extend their unbeaten run to six matches.
