Soccer in the United States could get a huge boost should the USMNT go far in the tournament this summer. They are co-hosting the tournament with Mexico and Canada, which makes it the perfect opportunity for Mauricio Pochettino's side to show a mainstream American audience what they can do.
The USMNT is not expected to win the tournament, despite Pochettino's "why not" attitude. At least getting out of their group, which consists of Paraguay, Australia, and Türkiye, is a must. Then a run in the knockout stages could claim the hearts of a U.S. audience.

The United States is often thought to be an emerging soccer nation, but they were there at the 1930 World Cup when many big nations in the sport, such as England, did not show up.
Back in 1930, only 13 teams were competing in the tournament. The USMNT defeated Paraguay and Belgium both by the scoreline of 3-0 to progress to the semi-finals. They then lost 6-1 to Argentina, but were retrospectively awarded a third-place finish based on a ranking system by FIFA in 1986.
1930 was so long ago, and soccer was very different then. Therefore, many would claim their quarter-final finish in 2002 to be their best finish, at least of the modern era.

Reaching the quarter-finals of the 2002 World Cup was the USMNT's best run of the modern era. Hosting the 1994 tournament and making it to the round of 16 helped inspire a generation of soccer fans. However, it has not all been rosy since then, as failing to qualify for the 2018 tournament was a disaster.
The United States also had a barren spell of failing to qualify for nine tournaments between 1950 and 1990. Whilst they withdrew from the 1938 qualification process due to financial reasons.

The USMNT only had two group stage games to play to progress to the semi-finals. They won them both by the scoreline of 3-0. However, they were then brought back down to earth by a thrashing by eventual runners-up Argentina.

The 1934 tournament hosted in Italy was unusual in that it did not have a group stage. Therefore, it was a long way for the United States to go to play just one match.

The USMNT did well to advance from their group and reach the knockout stages in the tournament they were hosting. They qualified as the best third-placed team behind Romania and Switzerland, but at the expense of Colombia. However, they went on to be knocked out by eventual winners Brazil.

The USMNT shocked the world by defeating Portugal in the group stage. The finished second behind South Korea to progress to the knockout stages. The Stars and Stripes then beat Mexico before narrowly losing 1-0 to Germany.
2010

The Stars and Stripes drew with England and Slovakia before Landon Donovan's late goal against Algeria booked their place in the knockout stages. The USMNT were then knocked out by Ghana, who they took to extra time.
2014
2-1 loss to Belgium in the quarter-finals
Revenge on the Ghanians happened in the group stage as the USMNT defeated them and drew with Portugal to progress to the knockout stages. Despite a heroic Tim Howard performance, the USMNT was defeated by Belgium in extra time.
2022

The USMNT had already defeated Portugal and Mexico on the route to making it to the quarter-finals. They lost to Germany there, but under controversial circumstances. Gregg Berhalter's header was cleared off the line by Torsten Frings.

Recent World Cup performance and trajectory
The USMNT has reached the round of 16 in each of the last three tournaments that the team qualified for. In 2010, the USMNT managed draws with England and Slovakia before Donovan's late winner claimed a 1-0 win over Algeria. However, they then went on to lose narrowly to Ghana after extra time.
2014 saw the surprise decision by the USMNT manager, Jurgen Klinsmann, not to pick Donovan. However, the Stars and Stripes still managed to beat Ghana and draw with Portugal. Another draw with Wales was followed by a 1-0 win over Iran, thanks to a goal from Christian Pulisic. Berhalter's side then lost 3-1 to the Netherlands in their last World Cup game to date.

History has proven that the USMNT can upset the odds by claiming unexpected results to advance in the tournament. In the modern era, their best result was the quarter-finals, where they controversially lost to Germany in 2002. However, that was with a very good team.
