The USMNT now stands a better chance against Belgium thanks to Folarin Balogun

With the USMNT about to contest their fourth Round of 16 contest in as many World Cup appearances since 2010, some big news puts the Americans in position to continue their run on home soil.

After being shown a red card for what was described as a "totally unintentional" incident, Folarin Balogun has been given a lifeline back into what will be a crucial last 16 contest against Belgium.

On Sunday afternoon, it was confirmed that Balogun would be eligible to play in the USMNT's Round of 16 contest, set to take place Monday in Seattle. This comes as the suspension will be deferred, something that can be done under Article 27 of FIFA's disciplinary code.

When The Athletic broke the news, it initially remained to be seen if this is a full U-Turn on FIFA's part or if there was a process involved that saw U.S. Soccer ask for the deferral, but this is still massive news for a USMNT side that was scrambling for a solution to a resurgent Belgium attack. However, a Sunday afternoon update to the piece confirmed that FIFA had converted the decision into a one-year probationary period, meaning that the suspension would only come back into place if Balogun commits another red card-eligible foul during the one-year period.

Balogun's insertion easily tilts the scales, making this more of a 50-50 contest

With Balogun out of the lineup, Belgium's roster of stars easily puts them in position to control this match. Romelu Lukaku has had his fair share of big misses, but he is one of the world's better strikers when at his best. Kevin de Bruyne has been the midfield maestro for Manchester City and now Napoli, while Leandro Trossard's 2025-26 campaign with Arsenal - one that saw him record eight goals across all competitions - earned him a transfer to Süper Lig side Besiktas.

But with Balogun set to appear, the situation for Mauricio Pochettino and Co. easily improves. Whereas Pochettino would more than likely have to back on Christian Pulisic finding his form and acting as a forward anchor for the likes of Ricardo Pepi and Weston McKennie, he can now bring Pepi out of the starting lineup for Balogun, who leads the USMNT in goals scored at this World Cup.

Obviously, that will have a ripple effect on what the midfield looks like; Balogun's insertion will help take the pressure off of the likes of Tyler Adams and force Belgium to re-focus their defensive efforts. Had Balogun been out for this match, Belgium manager Rudy Garcia could have focused more on a midfield presence to neutralize the five-player midfield combination that the USMNT has now used three times at this World Cup. That would keep the Americans from creating chances while giving Lukaku and others like Jeremy Doku support in the attack.

Instead, Garcia will have to sacrifice his midfield in favor of a backline designed to contain Balogun while also keeping Pulisic and others from converting final-third runs into dangerous scoring chances. That could take the form of a four-player defensive line, which was used by Belgium for much of the tournament thus far.

In terms of where each of the two teams will position themselves on the pitch, we could now see the USMNT take risks and put themselves right around midfield, forcing Belgium to try and build up from their final third. This new formation would also allow for Balogun and Pulisic to set up closer to Belgium's final third, further forcing Garcia to commit numbers closer towards Thibaut Courtois.

Had Balogun been out, it would have been Belgium controlling the middle of the pitch, with De Bruyne and Tielemans acting as anchors holding the USMNT in their own end save for counterattacking opportunities.

In short, Balogun's return opens the door for a much faster and much more explosive contest between the United States and Belgium. That's a style that favors a younger USMNT and one that puts the pressure on a veteran-filled Belgium side to keep up or else risk losing control of a bounce-back World Cup.
