The last two years have been a revelation of sorts for Sebastian Berhalter.
In considering a significant increase in goalscoring contributions to the Vancouver Whitecaps, who recently appeared in an MLS Cup Final and are currently in a battle with San Jose and LAFC for control of the top spot in MLS' Western Conference, Berhalter was bound to receive opportunities to further his career.
The 2026 World Cup gave him such an opportunity, but it will be his next move that could be even more decisive.
It was announced that Berhalter would join EFL Championship side Middlesbrough ahead of the 2026-27 campaign.
Middlesbrough are coming off a 2025-26 campaign that saw them finish fifth in the Championship table while making it to the promotion playoff final by virtue of Southampton being disqualified due to Spygate 2.0. At the same time, Middlesbrough exited that season's Carabao and FA Cup competitions at the first time of asking; the former saw the club lose 4-0 to Doncaster Rovers, while the latter exit took the form of a 3-1 loss to Premier League side Fulham.
Does success follow a player that leaves Vancouver?
This might not necessarily be applicable to every player that decides to leave the Whitecaps for greener pastures (figuratively speaking), but some noticeable names have come from Vancouver in recent times.
Canadian left back Alphonso Davies left Vancouver for Bundesliga side Bayern Munich after spending two years with the western Canadian club. Davies' move to Bayern came off the heels of a 2018 campaign that saw him score eight goals in 31 MLS games. He's since been a key component of Bayern's plethora of title-winning campaigns in both domestic and European competition.
Over seven years later, following the Whitecaps' highly successful 2025 campaign, Canadian midfielder Ali Ahmed signed a transfer with Championship side Norwich City. Though he only scored four goals in 39 games during that campaign, he recorded three goals across three appearances during the club's run in the Canadian Championship, Canada's national cup competition. Upon arriving in England, Ahmed scored four goals in his first 21 games for Norwich City, a tally that already represented half of his total goalscoring haul in North America.
Now, Berhalter leaves for Europe after starting the 2026 season with seven goals across 18 appearances in all competitions. He also scored eight goals in 47 games played during the 2025 season, with four of them coming in MLS play.
Though it seems players are taking an interest in Vancouver as a footballing destination and finding success there, the opposite has also been true in recent times. Berhalter's departure is only one of two major outgoing transfers from MLS; striker Hugo Cuypers, formerly a part of the Chicago Fire and the joint-top goalscorer in MLS, recently left the Fire for Liga MX side Monterrey after the former acquired ex-Barcelona and Bayern Munich striker Robert Lewandowski.
But will Berhalter replicate what his Canadian counterparts did following their respective departures from Vancouver?
At the very least, he will have the opportunity to do so.
Middlesbrough came oh so close to promotion during the 2025-26 season, and they will at least enter the 2026-27 campaign in position to contend for promotion to the Premier League, somewhere they haven't been in a decade. Their case will be helped by the fact that the promotion playoffs will expand from four to six teams starting this season, meaning that Middlesbrough can now finish eighth in the table to be able to have a chance at securing promotion via the playoffs. Under the new format, the top two teams will still earn direct promotion to the Premier League, but clubs finishing between third and eighth will fight for the final promotion place.
By joining Middlesbrough, Berhalter will almost certainly become a key cog in Middlesbrough's offensive prospects, with his performance and ability to help create goals for the club dictating how well they perform during the Championship campaign. By extension, his move from North America to England and subsequent performance will impact his inclusion for fall international friendlies and a CONCACAF Nations League campaign.
Perhaps, with a strong 2026-27 campaign, Berhalter could ascend in the USMNT hierarchy, replicating what other Whitecaps players have been able to do with their own national teams following their own moves to Europe.
