After a week of basking in the glory of their biggest World Cup win for 96 years, it is now time for the United States to return to action. A week ago, an early own goal, followed by a spectacular Folarin Balogun's brace, saw Mauricio Pochettino's team 3-0 in front by half time against Paraguay at SoFi. La Albirroja did pull one back, but Gio Reyna's gorgeous outside of the boot curler secured victory.
So now, the United States are aiming to start a World Cup campaign with back-to-back wins for the first time since the inaugural edition in 1930. Back then, USA beat both Belgium and Paraguay 3-0 in Montevideo, en route to the semi-finals. With every American dreaming of a repeat this summer, can Pochettino's team make it two wins out of two, thereby cementing their spot in the knockouts?

United States vs Australia match preview
As already outlined, after demolishing Paraguay 4-1 in Los Angeles, co-hosts United States are all but guaranteed a spot in the knockout stages. Even if they were to lose their final two group games, the excellent goal difference would surely see them sneak through in third. Having said that, this certainly will not be what Pochettino is thinking, because a victory here would leave the U.S. on the brink of securing top spot in Group D, presenting them with an easier path later on.
So, how much of a challenge will Australia pose? Well, the Socceroos are in a similar position to their opponents, equally brimming with confidence. Tony Popovic's team put in a tactical masterclass as they beat Türkiye 2-0 in Vancouver on Saturday night. The Crescent-Stars had 72% of possession, racking up 30 shots to nine, but the Aussies were devastating on the counter-attack, with Nestory Irankunda and then Connor Metcalfe both scoring spectacular goals.
So, in this clash at Lumen Field, expect Australia to defend deep, limiting the U.S. to very few opportunties, while also posing a threat going in the other direction. Thus, the onus will very much be on the United States to create chances and score goals, making the potential absence of Christian Pulisic due to a calf issue a concern. Nevertheless, we are backing USA for a victory in Seattle.
Prediction: United States 2-1 Australia
