The United States women's national team's next opponents have been revealed. On Monday morning, in an exciting announcement, U.S. soccer confirmed that Emma Hayes' side will take on world champions Spain in a double-header of friendlies during the October international window.

USWNT vs. Spain friendly double-header fixture details

  • Saturday 10 October: Audi Field, Washington DC. Kick off 2:30pm ET.
  • Tuesday 13 October: Subaru Park, Chester, Pennsylvania. Kick off 7pm ET.

The first fixture takes place at Audi Field, home of D.C. United of Major League Soccer, as well as NWSL team Washington Spirit. This will be the USWNT's fourth fixture at the venue, which broke ground in 2018, most-recently beating Canada 3-0 in a friendly in July 2025.

Three days later, they'll head to Philadelphia for the second game at Subaru Park. Their most recent outing in Pennsylvania came in October last year, actually beaten 2-1 by Spain's Iberian neighbours Portugal next to the Commodore Barry Bridge, on the banks of the Delaware River.

Facing Spain twice is an exciting prospect for supporters and players alike, with head coach Emma Hayes certainly sharing this sentiment:

"Two more fantastic matches. We’ve desperately wanted to get Spain on our schedule, but the difficulties of scheduling the top teams during the women’s international calendar are well known, so to be able to get these two games on the East Coast will be the perfect tests before we head into World Cup qualifying at the end of the year."

Spain are available for friendlies after securing their World Cup spot in June. France, Germany and Denmark are the only other European teams to have qualified automatically, with all the other heavyweights involved in play-offs, thereby making them unavailable to meet the United States. Nevertheless, considering this is the top two teams in the FIFA World Rankings going head-to-head, US Soccer literally could not have secured a stronger opponent.

Spain won the World Cup for the very first time in 2023, beating England 2-1 in Sydney, before reaching last year's European Championship Final, this time defeated by the Lionesses on penalties at St. Jakob-Park. La Roja have also won back-to-back UEFA Women's Nations League titles, but finished fourth at the Olympics, ousted by Brazil in the semi-finals at Stade Vélodrome.

Despite Spain being the dominant force in women's international soccer in the 2020s, they have remarkably only ever met the U.S. on four occasions to date, all since 2019.

USWNT vs. Spain head-to-head record

  • January 2019. Spain 0-1 USA. Friendly. Christen Press 54'. Estadio José Rico Pérez.
  • June 2019: Spain 1-2 USA. World Cup round of 16. Megan Rapinoe 7' 75'. Stade Auguste-Delaune.
  • March 2020: USA 1-0 Spain. SheBelieves Cup. Julie Ertz 87'. Red Bull Arena, New Jersey.
  • October 2022: Spain 2-0 USA. Friendly. El Sadar, Pamplona.

The last time these two nations met, Spain actually beat the United States 2-0 in a friendly. At that time, having lost at Wembley four days earlier, the wheels were really starting to fall off under Vlatko Andonovski, with the alarm bells ringing load and clear, six months before a disastrous World Cup campaign down under.

Back in 2019, en route to World Cup glory in France, a pair of Megan Rapinoe penalties saw the Stars and Stripes oust Spain in the round of 16 in Reims. Seven years on, this remains the last World Cup or Euros knockout match la Roja have lost in 90 minutes.

Thus, two blockbuster fixtures await later this year, before the U.S. commence the CONCACAF W Championship against El Salvador in Texas in November.
