He'll be ready for any role: starting, coming off the bench, or being the old guy in the corner with the orange slices and team talks.

Yes, at 38, USMNT center-back Tim Ream has a lot of miles on his odometer. His first appearance was in 2010, and Brad Guzan was in goal. Never a speed merchant, he’s lost what he had. But Ream is a must for the USMNT roster, because of the adage 'Age is just a number, but experience is priceless.'

Experienced CBs still playing in their late 30s means that their positioning and leadership outweigh the paucity of athleticism. No-nonsense defending and mental toughness over technical flair. They 'read the game,' which in soccer means analyzing, interpreting, and anticipating the action on the field. They see the "bigger picture," allowing them to make smart decisions before they happen rather than merely reacting.

In an interview with The Athletic, Ream weighed in on this: “When clubs think about center-backs, stats and data do not translate. If you are top for tackles, you are either doing something else wrong or someone in front of you is doing something wrong. How do you quantify a center-back being in the right position?”

There are always spots on any roster for someone with that much experience. Again, he played with Brad Guzan!

Ream’s player history is primarily in English football, where he is five games away from the 400-game mark. He signed with Bolton in 2012 and was in and out of the lineup until the 2013–14 season when he made 42 appearances. In acknowledgement of his play, he was voted both the fans’ and club’s player of the year.

In 2015, Ream was sold to Fulham, with whom he signed a four-year contract. He grew in stature and in the 2022-23 and 2023-24 Premiership campaigns, he frequently wore the captain’s armband. He was the team's vice-captain and when Club Captain Tom Cairney wasn’t in the lineup, Ream would be the first out of the tunnel.

When asked about the upcoming World Cup, Ream said that USMNT head coach Mauricio Pochettino had not talked to him about his plans for 2026. Ream said, “I’m going to keep pushing and be ready for any role; starting, coming off the bench, or being the old guy in the corner with the orange slices and team talks. I continue to push because I care and want to be there. That’s not solely down to me. You can do all those things and still not be picked. It’s a huge honor whenever you get the call to come in. It’s not one I’ll be turning down.”
