The United States women's national team may take a backseat to the men this summer. But that does not mean that they are quietly preparing for their World Cup in 2027. As opposed to the men, the women are looking to claim their record fifth World Cup title.

The pool and the depth from the women is strong. Head coach Emma Hayes has a lot of decisions to make for friendly's for the rest of this season and entering next year.

One player that will be looked was captain in 2026. Her leadership was on display as the team beat Chile 5-0.

Emily Sams is the USWNT's next big leader

Her ability on the pitch and as a leader could be a huge reason why she receives a call next summer. That is impressive considering she has only made 10 appearances with the team. Giving her an arm band despite fewer games shows she has a strong chance.

Playing for Angel City FC of the NWSL will help raise her profile. The team has a lot of additional star power and marketing behind it. Being a visible member of the team will allow her to gain more traction for another call up for the national team.

Emma Hayes should have an idea already for who she is calling up for summer. They have two pivotal friendlies against Brazil. These matches should give Hayes more an idea what will be going on next summer.

It would be surprising to have Sams be called up. She will be a viable option and could wear the arm band if perennial captain, Lindsey Heaps, is not available.

Sams was on the roster in 2024 for the Olympics. She did not make an appearance for a team that redefined the national team's legacy. Now it is her time to make a new legacy and be a part of what Emma Hayes is looking for.

It was one of the reasons why the United States is so dominant in the World Cup and Olympics for women. The depth is so strong that there could up to 50 players that could earn a roster spot. They can only take 26.

Now, Sams can prove why she was given the arm band in January. A few more impressive games in friendlies or in the NWSL will make it impossible for her to be ignored for the World Cup.
