For USMNT fans, the highlight of the Bundesliga schedule in Game 2 was a game between Joe Scally's Borussia Mönchengladbach and national team hopeful Cole Campbell's Elversberg. While that game didn't disappoint, it wasn't the only game involving Americans playing in Germany. Let's look at how every American performed on match day 2 of the Bundesliga.
Cole Campbell, Elversberg
It’s been an amazing start to the campaign for Campbell and Elversberg. One week after knocking off Bayer Leverkusen, they took down Borussia Mönchengladbach 4-3. Campbell didn’t play as big a role in this one as he did last week. Despite not tallying a goal or assist, he put in a solid 64-minute shift for the Bundesliga newcomers.
Joe Scally, Borussia Mönchengladbach
With Campbell and Elversberg getting the win, Scally was on the losing side of Saturday’s 4-3 game. Getting the start at right back, Scally was part of the reason Campbell wasn’t as effective on the left wing. Before exiting in the 77th minute, Scally scored a 56th-minute goal on the counterattack. He also left the game when Mönchengladbach was ahead 3-2, with Elversberg scoring two late goals to win without Scally’s defensive presence to help close out the game.
Malik Tillman, Bayer Leverkusen
After losing to Elversberg last week, Leverkusen bounced back with a 4-0 win over Union Berlin. Unfortunately, Tillman was the lowest-rated player in Leverkusen’s starting lineup. It wasn’t a poor performance from Tillman; he just failed to capitalize in a game that Leverkusen dominated from start to finish, getting subbed out after 67 minutes.
Santiago Castañeda, Paderborn
Castañeda got the start in his usual spot in the center of midfield for Paderborn. Most of his touches on Saturday were in his defensive half of the field, trying to clean up messes. Castañeda did manage three touches in the box and got one shot off. He also played 90 minutes, although Paderborn lost to Freiburg 1-0.
Noahkai Banks, Augsburg
A decision between the USMNT and Germany could be looming for Banks at the upcoming international window. In the meantime, he’s looked like one of Augsburg’s best during the early part of the Bundesliga season. Other than getting a yellow card, Banks was close to flawless in a 4-1 win over Eintracht Frankfurt on Sunday. For the second straight game, Banks played 90 minutes, anchoring a defense that’s allowed just one goal across two games and sits atop the Bundesliga standings. Right now, he’s projected to be on the USMNT September roster, but only if he’s willing to accept the call.
