There's an intriguing mix of Americans in the German Bundesliga this season, and many saw action on the field on match day 6. Some of those players had more understated performances or had limited time off the bench. However, all of the Americans in the Bundesliga are worth watching closely heading into the next USMNT camp in November. Here is a look at how the Americans in Germany performed on match day 6.
Mathis Albert, Borussia Dortmund
Well, it’s about time. Albert finally made his first Bundesliga appearance of the season, subbing on for the final 20 minutes of Dortmund’s scoreless draw with Union Berlin. It wasn’t a ton of time to make an impact, although Albert got 18 touches in 20 minutes, drew a foul, and made three defensive contributions. Dortmund manager Niko Kovač indicated that more minutes could be on the horizon for Albert, so let’s hope this is the start of regular appearances.
Joe Scally, Borussia Mönchengladbach
Fresh off his goal last week, Scally had a rather unspectacular game on Sunday, as Mönchengladbach lost 2-1 to Hoffenheim. He played all 90 minutes as a right winger, although most of his 37 touches came in his own half of the field. Scally made five defensive contributions, but rather predictably, he didn’t do much to help Mönchengladbach generate an attack in their loss.
Santiago Castañeda, Paderborn
It was yet another strong performance for Castañeda. The center midfielder had the second-highest grade of any Paderborn starter in the team’s 2-2 draw with Werder Bremen. Castañeda had a game-high 14 defensive contributions, while also managing to create one chance on the other end of the field. He won seven of his eight duels and made five passes into the final third. Obviously, the USMNT midfield is crowded, but his performances in the Bundesliga week after week warrant a look from Mauricio Pochettino at some point.
Malik Tillman, Bayer Leverkusen
Tillman had something of a redemption game midweek amidst transfer rumors. But he was back on the bench for Leverkusen’s 2-1 win over Freiburg on Sunday. Tillman came on as a sub in the 73rd minute, shortly before Leverkusen scored the game-winning goal. However, he was limited to just 12 touches and one defensive contribution, limiting his impact as he tries to carve out a bigger role and regain his starting spot.
Cole Campbell, Elversberg
Unfortunately, Campbell didn’t play over the weekend because of an ankle injury he picked up in training. The good news is that he’s only expected to miss one or two weeks. Without him, Elversberg beat Augsburg 4-3 to continue the newly promoted club’s impressive start to the season.
