USMNT Bundesliga recap match day 3 recap: Cole Campbell almost steals the show against Bayern Munich

Three weeks into the Bundesliga season, a handful of Americans have established themselves as regulars for their German club teams. Granted, match day 3 wasn't the best for the USMNT contingent. However, there were some performances worth noting from the Americans in Germany.

Cole Campbell, Elversberg

Campbell scored a brilliant goal for Elversberg right before halftime, outpacing Dayot Upamecano and then finding the back of the net. Unfortunately, one of his teammates was called offside in the build-up, negating the goal. Other than that, Campbell didn’t see much of the ball against Bayern Munich before being taken off at halftime. However, his quickness was on display on the disallowed goals and on a few other occasions. The 20-year-old has impressed early in the season for the Bundesliga debutantes, who lost a hard-fought game to Munich 2-1.

Malik Tillman, Bayer Leverkusen

Tillman had to come off the bench for Leverkusen on Saturday, entering the game in the 75th minute. At the time, Leverkusen was trailing Augsburg 2-1, with Tillman getting the assist on Patrik Schick’s equalizer. Despite going 0 for 5 on ground duels, Tillman managed to leave his mark on the game and help Leverkusen escape with a point.

Noahkai Banks, Augsburg

While Tillman started on the bench, Banks played the full 90 for Augsburg. The 19-year-old was not at his best, receiving his lowest grade of the season. Banks also picked up a yellow card for the second consecutive game. We know that he won’t be part of the USMNT September camp, although his decision on whether to represent the U.S. or Germany is still up in the air.

Joe Scally, Borussia Mönchengladbach

It was an absolute nightmare for Scally and the Mönchengladbach defense on Saturday. They suffered a 5-0 defeat at the hands of Freiburg, going down 3-0 in the first 30 minutes. If there’s a silver lining, Scally ended up being the highest-rated member of the Mönchengladbach back line, although that doesn’t say much. Scally won seven of his 10 duels and didn’t commit a foul. He also picked up a yellow card and drew four fouls while playing the full 90 minutes for a Gladbach squad that’s winless in three matches and has conceded 12 goals.

Santiago Castañeda, Paderborn

Castañeda and Paderborn got tested on Saturday against Borussia Dortmund. Unfortunately, they collectively failed the test. The 21-year-old Castañeda did his best but was overwhelmed by a far more established Dortmund midfield. For what it’s worth, Castañeda has been otherwise solid in his defensive midfield role for Paderborn, who has allowed just four goals in three games despite falling to score its first Bundesliga goal of the season.
