Thursday was a huge day for Americans in Europa League. There were two different games that featured USMNT players on opposing teams. Naturally, some players took advantage of their opportunity, while others, not so much. Let's check out all of the Americans in action on match day 3 of Europa League.
Weston McKennie, Juventus
McKennie and Juventus found themselves in a dogfight with French side Rennes. Both teams scored within the first 15 minutes, and then both teams scored on a penalty later in the game, with the match ultimately finishing 2-2. McKennie didn’t contribute to either goal, although he was one of the better players on the field for Juventus, creating four chances and making three defensive contributions. He ended up playing 90 minutes, with most of his action on the right side in an advanced position.
Bryan Reynolds, Rennes
Reynolds opposed McKennie and Juventus, playing all 90 minutes as a right wing-back. It was a game of mixed results for Reynolds, who provided an assist on a perfect header across the face of the goal, but also conceded the penalty that allowed Juventus to tie the game 2-2. Reynolds was a little unlucky, but he did have his arm in an unnatural position. Even with the penalty, it was a strong showing for Reynolds, who is fighting to become a regular starter at Rennes.
Malik Tillman, Bayer Leverkusen
For the second straight Thursday, Tillman gave Leverkusen an excellent performance in Europa League. A week ago, Tillman scored a goal, but on this day he provided the assist on Jonas Hoffman’s second goal. Tillman also had a shot on goal, recorded a game-high five chances created, and made four defensive contributions. Outside of Hoffman, he had the highest grade of anyone on the field in 74 minutes of action.
Tim Weah, Marseille
Weah made a brief cameo off the bench, coming into the game in the 83rd minute. After going 90 minutes last Thursday and again this past Sunday, Weah needed a breather. Unfortunately, Marseille gave up a 13th-minute goal to Sturm Graz that held up over the full 90, as Weah couldn’t do much in his limited minutes.
Tyler Adams, Bournemouth
It was another strong Europa League performance by Bournemouth, with Adams in the middle of it. His biggest contribution to the game was getting walloped in the face by Milan goalie Mike Maignan on a corner. Maignan got a red card, while Bournemouth was awarded a penalty that put them ahead 2-0. Adams was also predictably solid in midfield, making two defensive contributions over 62 minutes of action. He did pick up a yellow card in the first half, although it’s just his second of the season with Bournemouth, who dominated in a 3-0 victory.

Yunus Musah, AC Milan
There wasn’t much Musah could do in Milan’s road loss to Adams and Bournemouth. He had nothing to do with either of the early penalties AC Milan gave away to fall behind. Musah finished a perfect 22 for 22 on his passes and made four defensive contributions. However, it just wasn’t Milan’s night.
Christian Pulisic, AC Milan
Pulisic didn’t play in Milan’s 3-0 loss, so he and Adams didn't get to square off head-to-head. The Italian side was outclassed in every possible way on England’s south coast. Around the time it would have made sense to put Pulisic in the game, it was already a lost cause.
Christ Richards, Crystal Palace
Once again, it wasn’t the best day for Richards and Palace, who had to travel to Istanbul for a game against Besiktas. After scoring twice in five minutes early in the second half, Palace conceded a 73rd-minute goal, with the match ultimately finishing in a 2-2 draw. Richards had five defensive contributions and won all four of his aerial duals, but he also had no tackles and got beat on the first Besiktas goal in a rather subpar performance from the USMNT center-back, especially on the heels of a brutal loss to Brighton last weekend.
Tanner Tessman, Lyon
Tessman probably had the worst night of any American in Europa League. Despite making five defensive contributions and winning his only two duels, Tessman was subbed off at halftime. Down 1-0 at the half, Lyon went on to lose 3-0 to Hoffenheim. After playing 90 minutes and scoring the game-winner this past weekend, Thursday’s game was a huge step back for Tessman, who needs far more consistency if he expects to be with the national team in November.
