Believe it or not, the extra-long international break is almost over for the USMNT. Thus far, the international window has been almost perfect for Mauricio Pochettino’s squad. The Americans have notched wins over Peru, Chile, and (most importantly) Mexico, scoring 11 goals across those three games while conceding just three goals. All that’s left is Tuesday’s game against Canada.
The U.S. and Canada have become frenemies in recent years. Not only have the Canadians moved up in the CONCACAF hierarchy, nearly reaching the same level as the U.S. and Mexico, but they are also coached by American Jesse Marsch. It’s well established that Marsch has an ax to grind with the U.S. Soccer Federation, making him extra motivated to beat the USMNT. The Canadians are also coming off back-to-back wins over Chile and Peru, enjoying post-World Cup success as well.

USMNT vs Canada match preview
As much as Marsch wants to beat the U.S., Pochettino will want to beat Canada. He surely still has a sour taste in his mouth from losing the Nations League third-place match to the Canadians early in his tenure in March 2025. On the heels of a 3-0 shellacking of Mexico, Pochettino will want to make a statement against the USMNT’s other top competition in the upcoming Nations League. He’ll also want to finish off the international window with four wins in four games.
Of course, the Canadians aren’t going to make things easy. They’ve been stingy defensively during the window, holding both Peru and Chile scoreless. Obviously, the Canadian attack hasn’t looked as potent or clinical as the Americans'. But the likes of Jonathan David, Cyle Larin, and others give the Canadians plenty of potential match-winners.
Just like the USMNT, Canada is fresh off a trip to the Round of 16 in last summer’s World Cup, giving the squad plenty of confidence. There’s also been a little bit of experimentation, with key figures like Alistair Johnston, Alphonso Davies, and Jonathan Osorio all missing, just as Christian Pulisic and Weston McKennie are absent for the U.S. This will be a tricky game, but this youthful USMNT roster has passed every test thus far and will ultimately take care of business against the Canadians.
Prediction: United States 2-0 Canada
