Every child grows up dreaming of representing their national team, but few could ever imagine leading the USMNT onto the pitch for a home World Cup.

For one standout on the current roster, that dream is about to become a reality. He will be the man wearing the armband, leading his side into battle against Paraguay, Australia, and Turkey on the world’s biggest stage.

Mauricio Pochettino faces a major decision ahead of the United States’ opening World Cup match, with Tyler Adams, Tim Ream and Christian Pulisic all having worn the captain’s armband this year.

Pulisic’s influence is undeniable, but his role higher up the pitch does not naturally lend itself to controlling and organising the team throughout matches. Ream, meanwhile, has struggled for consistency in MLS, leaving his place in the starting XI far from certain.

We look at the three favoured captain picks for when the tournament kicks off in Los Angeles for the USMNT

Tyler Adams

Tyler Adams is a logical choice for captain given his Premier League experience and long-standing importance to the USMNT. He was also Gregg Berhalter’s preferred captain during the 2022 World Cup, underlining the trust placed in him at the highest level.

Adams embodies the intensity, leadership, and discipline required on the biggest stage, constantly demanding high standards from teammates both in and out of possession. Whether it is leading the press, maintaining the team’s structure, or protecting the defence, he sets the tone from midfield through his work rate, organisation, and composure under pressure.

Unlike more attack-minded stars, Adams influences every phase of the game and provides the balance that allows others to flourish. He also carries the respect of both teammates and coaches thanks to his experience captaining the national team in major tournaments. If fully fit, and his injury record remains a concern, he still feels like the natural leader of this United States squad.

Chris Richards

The centre-back role has always felt like the ideal position for a captain, given the responsibility to organise the team, control positioning, and constantly communicate across the pitch. Whether Chris Richards possesses every leadership trait remains open to debate, but his quality and experience command the respect of the squad.

He is now a guaranteed starter in central defence following his performances over the past 18 months for Crystal Palace, form that also earned him the 2025 U.S. Soccer Male Player of the Year award.

Weston McKennie

The central midfielder recently carried the armband for Juventus in for a bit in 2025 and has earned his way into a guaranteed starter role in the national team. Weston McKennie offers energy and leadership through action. He can play as a box-to-box midfielder, deeper controller, wing-back, or even in advanced roles when needed, making him one of the most tactically flexible players available. His physicality, aerial ability, and ball-carrying also provide balance to the midfield, particularly in high-intensity matches.

Beyond his footballing qualities, McKennie brings personality and confidence that often energise the squad. He is vocal, emotionally invested, and unafraid of big occasions,  traits that naturally pull teammates together and bring success.

The captain carries immense responsibility, and with huge expectations surrounding the team, the question is whether any of these players can truly shoulder the pressure of leading a nation at a World Cup.
