Haji Wright just did something remarkable that no USMNT player has ever matched

With just 50 days to go until the World Cup commences, USMNT fans are keeping an even closer eye than usual on their key players across Europe and the world. Few Americans across the pond will have enjoyed their club season more than Haji Wright, becoming the highest-scoring US player in a single EFL Championship season.

His club Coventry City were mathematically promoted back to the Premier League for the first time since 2001 on Friday night, courtesy of a 1-1 draw with Blackburn at Ewood Park. Then, on Tuesday night, the Sky Blues clinched England second-tier title thanks to a 5-1 demolition of Portsmouth.

Wright was the man to break the deadlock at a celebratory Coventry Building Society Arena. Frank Lampard's team will be presented with the EFL trophy when Wrexham, who Americans may have heard of, visit the East Midlands on Sunday. Wright has certainly been a key figure for Coventry, scoring 18 times across all competitions, including 17 in the Championship.

57 Americans have plied their trade in England's second division, including the nine who do so right now, but Wright's tally of 17 goals is the most any USMNT player has managed in a single campaign.

Wright and Josh Sargent both scored 16 goals back in the 2023/24 season, a tally the former has bettered this time round. Wright would need just seven more goals to break Sargent's all-time EFL Championship record of 51, which he won't be adding to now that he's departed Norfolk for Toronto FC. With Coventry Premier League-bound, Wright will be hoping he isn't featuring in the Championship again anytime soon, after Cov's final two fixtures against Wrexham and Watford.

Another player who features on this list is Patrick Agyemang, thanks to his ten goal-haul for Derby County this season. However, heartbreakingly, the 25 year old will not be available for the World Cup after suffering a serious achilles tendon injury against Stoke on Easter Monday. This though surely only enhances Wright's chances of being on Mauricio Pochettino's roster.

He missed March's friendlies against Belgium and Portugal, but had featured in three of four beforehand, bagging a brace against Australia at Dick's Sporting Goods Park. This took his tally to seven international goals from just 20 caps, one of which came against the Netherlands in Qatar.

This summer, the Stars and Stripes will take on the Socceroos again, this time in Seattle, sandwiched in-between clashes with Paraguay and Türkiye at SoFi Stadium in California. While Christian Pulisic, Folarin Balogun, Malik Tillman and Tim Weah all appear to be ahead of Wright on the depth chart to start in attack, it would be a major surprise if his goal-scoring exploits at Coventry did not see him on the plane to LA.
