In case you missed it, four-time World Cup winners Germany were eliminated this week by, you guessed it, Paraguay.
Paraguay are no football minnow. The USA might have been mocked for beating them, but that energy soon switched to Germany being mocked for losing to them (via penalties).
The USA should take the painfully obvious double standard as a compliment, though. It shows that, for once, the USA is being taken seriously on the world football stage.
The USMNT subreddit is an awesome place to be right now. Both new and old fans of the USMNT are sharing their love of the World Cup and, not just watching the USA, but other teams, too.
The USA fans have fun about Paraguay beating Germany
After Germany was kicked out of the World Cup by Paraguay, there was only one thing for USMNT fans to do: act smug about it.
The thread, titled "It’s only Paraguay” puts the icing on the cake, really. That's exactly what American fans were told after beating Parguay in the group stage, but now, Paraguay has proven that they're a tough team to beat.
One fan in the comments campaigned for USA to cheer on Australia. That way, if Paraguay, Australia, and the USA make it far, then group D could really be regarded as the group of death. "Now, let’s cheer on Australia then we can say the USMT was in the 'group of death'"
Germany would not be in this mess if they took a note from the USA's playbook, pointed out another fan. "Why didn't Germany just beat them 4-1 in regulation, what are they stupid?"
Sport is a very subjective thing. Data pales insignificant to the raw emotion and 'eye test' feel of watching a game. However, in moments like this, a pretty simple formula can be applied. One USMNT fan outlined it brilliantly: "US > Paraguay... Paraguay > Germany. Thus, US > Germany. It's just Math."
Hard to argue against that one, really. Nobody really understands xG, or stupid VAR calls, but they can understand one thing. US > Germany. That's just the way the cookie crumbles.
Look, it's important not to jump the gun. Let's not get ahead of ourselves, here. There is still a Round of 32 game to be played tonight, but hey, who's writing off a Paraguay vs USA rematch in the knockout stage? It's certainly possible, but as one fan already did the math, it unfortunately cannot be the final. At best, USA could meet Paraguay again in the semifinal.
