Will the United States claim an historic World Cup victory? To date, the U.S. have only ever won one knockout stage match in the history of this competition, famously beating fierce rivals Mexico Dos A Cero in Jeonju in 2002; Brian McBride and Landon Donovan the scorers.

Aside from that, the United States have lost their other seven World Cup knockout tie, subsequently ousted in the round of 16 by Ghana, Belgium and the Netherlands four years ago. Now though, there is genuine belief that Mauricio Pochettino could guide the Stars and Stripes to a first quarter-final in 24 years. Before any of that, can they overcome Bosnia & Herzegovina in Santa Clara?

United States vs Bosnia match preview

The United States were so impressive during their first two matches at this summer's World Cup, so can they continue that momentum? The Stars and Stripes blew both Paraguay and Australia away, winning 4-1 and then 2-0, scoring five of their six goals across the two first halves. Not only did they get the job don early in those matches, the U.S. did so in the group as a whole, wrapping up top spot with a game to spare, something they'd never achieved previously.

As a result, Mauricio Pochettino took the opportunity to make nine changes against Türkiye on Thursday. His reserves competed well, only narrowly beaten 3-2 in the last minute, but all the regulars will return for this one. This includes a fit again Christian Pulisic, as well as Folarin Balogun, who has been their star to date. So, will the crowd in the San Francisco Bay Area get the result they want?

Bosnia & Herzegovina meantime are seeking to play the role of party-poopers. Well, this is something Sergej Barbarez's team have done very successfully throughout 2026 so far. The Dragons were favourites to beat neither Wales nor Italy in March's UEFA play-offs, going behind in both ties but equalising and prevailing in penalties shootouts both times to reach a first World Cup since 2014.

Once here, the Golden Lilies did just enough to get through the group stages. They battled to a 1-1 draw with Canada, before a pretty heavy defeat to Switzerland at SoFi. Nevertheless, in their final game, Bosnia had to beat Qatar to get through and did just that, prevailing 3-1 in Seattle, featuring a screamer from teenager Kerim Alajbegović. So, Bosnia will certainly not be an easy side to beat, especially if this tie at Levi' Stadium were to go to a penalty shootout. Nevertheless, based on what both have produced thus far, USA are likely to be too strong in California.

Prediction: United States 2-0 Bosnia & Herzegovina.
