United States vs Paraguay match preview
Will this World Cup opener go the same way as last November's friendly between the two? Mauricio Pochettino will certainly hope so. In Pennsylvania later last year, a Gio Reyna header, followed by a close-range Folarin Balogun finish, saw the U.S. beat Paraguay 2-1, albeit this game is rather more high profile. Having gone out in the round of 16 at each of the last three World Cups they have qualified for, the Stars and Stripes are aiming for a first quarter-final since 2002.
Recent friendlies have raised optimism. The United States beat Senegal 3-2 in Charlotte a fortnight ago, before being narrowly beaten by Germany in Chicago. Despite defeat, USMNT fans were encouraged by their performance, not just because of Antonee Robinson's thunderous equaliser. Now though, the serious business is about to begin, so will they make a winning start in California?
Meantime, how strong are Paraguay? Well, based on the fact they crashed out of Copa América 2024 without a point to their name, not very. However, los Guaraníes are vastly improved since then. This prompted them to change manager, with current boss Gustavo Alfaro losing only one of the 12 qualifiers he oversaw. Overall, he has lost only four of 19 fixtures in charge.
This is la Albirroja's first World Cup appearance since 2010, when they were quarter-finalists, unlikely to do that well this time, but they won't be push overs. So, this is a tricky opening fixture for the co-hosts, as they will be expected to win, but Paraguay will make life difficult. Nevertheless, the United States do boast enough quality to win this one, even if it won't be straight-forward.
