Back in March, USMNT and Coventry City forward Haji Wright was subbed off in the second half of a home loss to Southampton. “A bit of a sensation in his groin,” stated the team officials, and this raised flags around USMNT watchers because of Wright’s history of ankle injuries that have disrupted his development and on-field momentum, not to mention national team opportunities.
Injuries to the Achilles and groin can linger, which require management of playing and practice time. Wright did not suit up for the three games after Southampton, and he started in Coventry’s final four games, logging 67, 75, 71, and 79 minutes before being substituted. Although it was a blow to his Championship League Golden Boot chances (he finished tied for second with 17 goals), for the USMNT, it is great news.
Wright is a versatile striker with an imposing physical presence (he’s 6’4” and 180 lbs), has speed, and clinical finishing (more on this below). He stars for EFL Championship club Coventry City, for whom Wright was key to winning the league and promotion to the Premier League.
Haji Wright’s player history
Years | Club |
|---|---|
2015 | New York Cosmos |
2017–2019 | Schalke 04 |
2019–2020 | VVV-Venlo |
2020–2021 | SønderjyskE |
2021–2023 | Antalyaspor |
2023–present | Coventry City |
Born and raised in Los Angeles to parents with Liberian and Ghanaian heritage, Wright went to Culver City High School and was a product of the LA Galaxy academy.
After making four appearances with the New York Cosmos in 2015, Wright moved to Europe and played for Schalke 04, VVV-Venlo, and SønderjyskE. In 2021-22, he scored 14 goals in 32 appearances for Antalyaspor in Turkey, and followed it up the next season with 15 in 28.
In 2023, he joined Coventry City and scored 19 in 50 appearances. In 2024-2025, he scored 12 in 31 appearances, then went down with an ankle injury that kept him out for four months. In the just-completed season, he had 18 goals in all competitions appearing 43 times.

In a post-game interview after a crucial 3-0 Coventry win over Middlesbrough, where Wright scored all three goals, Frank Lampard, Coventry’s manager and Legend (must-add when mentioning “Lamps”), described Wright’s play, “You have to score in critical moments and we did today. Everybody worked and Haji did the business. It's so important to be clinical in the right moments. Sounds simple, but we haven't been too clinical… but tonight we were clinical.”
Being a clinical finisher in soccer means being highly efficient, precise, and ruthless in front of goal. Wright doesn’t waste chances. His Goals Per 90 rating is .59. According to FotMob, reliable center-forwards who guarantee double-digit league goals are in the 0.40 - 0.60 range.
So when sizing up his striking options, the USMNT’s Head Coach Mauricio Pochettino should call up the Coventry City manager. It seems that the way the USMNT's team is shaping up, scoring chances are going to be scarce. Poch is going to need someone who is ruthless, and Lamps knows a guy.
