This is the final chance for World Cup preparation for both the tournament co-hosts as well as the four-times champions of the world. So, who will seem more World Cup ready in Illinois?

It is three years since the United States and Germany most-recently met in a friendly in Connecticut. Back in October 2023, Christian Pulisic broke the deadlock at Pratt & Whitney Stadium, but goals from İlkay Gündoğan, Niclas Füllkrug and then Jamal Musiala saw die Nationalelf leave 3-1 winners. A lot has changed for both national teams since then, so will this rematch go the same way?

United States vs Senegal match preview

After claiming an encouraging friendly win last Sunday, can the U.S. secure a statement victory in Chicago? Six days ago, Mauricio Pochettino's team raced into an early 2-0 lead against Senegal in Charlotte, thanks to goals from Sergiño Dest and then Christian Pulisic. Sadio Mané's double either side of half time did fire the Lions of Téranga level in North Carolina but, pouncing on a poor back pass, Folarin Balogun's smart finish secured victory for the Stars and Stripes.

Having been easily beaten by both Belgium and Portugal at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in March, this was a much-needed morale-boosting win for the United States. They will kick off their World Cup campaign for real against Paraguay in California next Friday night, making this Pochettino's final tune up. Soldier Field is sold out for this Saturday fixture, so will the home crowd have a win to celebrate?

As for Germany, having appeared in eight World Cup finals, winning four of them, they are always among the favourites to go all the way. However, since hoisting aloft the trophy at the Maracanã 12 years ago, die Mannschaft have not featured in a single World Cup knockout game. They were ignominiously eliminated in the group stages in both Russia and Qatar, their only victories out of six coming against Sweden in Sochi and Costa Rica in Al Khor four and a half years later.

Nevertheless, since Julian Nagelsmann's appointment, this team is on the up. His first game in charge was a 3-1 win over the USA, subsequently leading die Mannschaft to the Euro quarter-finals and the Nations League semi-finals, both on home soil. In their send-off game on Sunday, Germany crushed Finland 4-0 in Mainz; Deniz Undav bagging a brace, while Florian Wirtz and Jamal Musiala also scored. This extended Germany's winning streak to eight matches, scoring 26 goals across these outings.

They are in Group E, taking on debutants Curaçao in Texas next Sunday, before clashes with Côte d'Ivoire and then Ecuador. Thus, put succinctly, this will be a serious test for the US. The Stars and Stripes have won two of their last three friendlies against Germany, so can they repeat that feat?
