USWNT Women's Super League match day 4 recap: Alyssa Thompson steals the show in London derby

Most of the attention is on the USMNT and its young roster on the heels of a 4-1 win over Peru. But we shouldn't forget about the USWNT, which is less than two weeks away from the first of two friendly matches with Spain. It was also a big week for Americans playing in the WSL, with USWNT players on opposite sides of a London derby between Arsenal and Chelsea. As we start to turn some of our attention to the women's national team, here is a look at the Americans in the WSL on match day 4.

Alyssa Thompson, Chelsea

There was just one goal in Sunday's London derby, and it was scored by Thompson. She started on the left wing for Chelsea and put away a rebound in the 39th minute. After the goal, Thompson had to spend a lot of time defending, spending much of the second half in Chelsea's defensive half of the field. Of course, when it mattered the most, Thompson had the golden touch. It's also worth noting that Naomi Girma was an unused sub for Chelsea, as she continues to work her way back from injury.

Emily Fox, Arsenal

Naturally, Fox ended up on the losing side of the Arsenal-Chelsea clash. She got the start at her usual right-back position, pitting her head-to-head with Thompson several times. In fact, it was Fox who lost track of Thompson when she scored her goal. Other than that, Fox had a solid performance, helping to create a couple of chances from the right flank. But the Gunners weren't able to find the equalizer.

Sam Coffey, Manchester City

Coffey finally got her first start of the WSL season on Saturday. She also started Man City's midweek 2-2 draw with Bayern Munich in the Women's Champions League and was back in the starting 11 over the weekend. Not only did she get the start, but Coffey played the full 90 minutes in a 1-0 win over Charlton. While she picked up a yellow card, Coffey did a nice job of helping Man City control the midfield. Playing 90 minutes is also an important step forward with those two games against Spain looming.

Phallon Tullis-Joyce, Manchester United

The early part of the season hasn't gone particularly well for Tullis-Joyce or Manchester United. However, she defended the United net on Sunday in a 2-1 win over West Ham. It wasn't Tullis-Joyce's finest performance, but she made a couple of key saves to help preserve the victory. Despite sitting out a midweek cup game, she remains Manchester United's unquestioned starter. However, that may not be the case in USWNT camp next month.
